Boletín de Prensa del Observatorio Europeo de Gerontomigraciones - European Observatory on Gerontomigration Press Bulletin (29 marzo 2019)

Boletín de Prensa del Observatorio Europeo de Gerontomigraciones / European Observatory on Gerontomigration Press Bulletin, nº 349, de 29 marzo de 2019.

Britain's Consulate in Southern Spain is set to hold two Brexit question and answer sessions on the Costa del Sol for expatriates this month.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator says that efforts to ring-fence the rights of Britons to protect them from a no-deal Brexit would be complicated and a "distraction" from the main aim of getting British Prime Minister Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement ratified. ... Barnier stressed that the rights of Britons in the EU were a priority for Brussels and each individual member state, but that ring-fencing would be too complicated given that so much of the Withdrawal Agreement is linked to citizens' rights.

"PSOE and SOMOS MOJACAR", The Le@der, 25 | 03 | 2019 - Noticia
PSOE and SOMOS MOJACAR will stand together at the upcoming local elections ... announced Manuel Zamora, general secretary for PSOE of Mojacar, and Jessica Simpson, leader of SOMOS MOJACAR. ... "...PSOE and SOMOS Mojacar reported last year to the press that following the last two padron revisions there seemed to be irregularities, as many well known neighbours were deleted. There was not a meticulous investigation of those being deleted and this could have lead to people being removed intentionally from the Padron, by those in power, to tilt the political scale in their favour. ... we want people to know that they have the right to call and see if they are elegible to vote ... and if not, they could possibly be included in the claim period against the new census from the 8th to the 15th of April...

For many observers the rise of Vox is worrying, and British expats in Spain should not imagine that they are unaffected. ... UK nationals are, after all, an immigrant group - and even more so assuming that Brexit goes ahead! Throughout the preparations for the departure ... from the EU, successive Spanish governments have reassured British residents that their status and rights will continue to be protected in Spain... But with Vox forecast to take ... seats in the next parliament ... there must be a worry...

"UK retirees in EU say NHS plans under no-deal Brexit are 'sick'", The Guardian, 20 | 03 | 2019 - Reportaje (Lisa O'Carroll)
The government has been described as sick and uncaring by an organisation representing more than 10,000 British nationals in Europe over NHS healthcare plans for pensioners in a no-deal Brexit scenario. ... Campaigners ... said the government plans were shameful and could cost lives.

The British government has moved to try to reassure the tens of thousands of retired Britons across the EU by agreeing to cover the costs of their healthcare in the event of a no-deal Brexit for 12 months. However much appears still to be up in the air. The UK's Health Minister Stephen Hammond ... also announced that anyone who is forced to return home to the UK for health reasons will have access to the NHS. ... retired Britons ... who have their healthcare funded by the UK under current EU arrangements and are resident in EU Member States on exit day can use NHS services in England without charge when on a temporary visit...

The health minister, Stephen Hammond, has said ... “The UK government has committed to fund healthcare for UK nationals (and others for whom the UK is responsible) who have applied for, or are undergoing, treatments in the EU prior to and on exit day, for up to one year, to protect the most vulnerable,” ... in a ministerial written statement. The move will come as a welcome relief to pensioners in countries such as Spain and France who were facing the immediate loss of the EU reciprocal arrangement whereby the NHS reimbursed the cost of their medical treatment. Such a prospect was a particular concern to cancer patients and those with ongoing medical needs. ... the offer ... prompted fury, with some Britons in the EU questioning what would happen if they fell sick after the UK left the EU. ... British nationals living abroad have also been reassured by Hammond that if they “face changes in how they can access healthcare” they may return to live in the UK and use the NHS if they wish from day one.

"Spain tops global health league but all is not well for expats", The Olive Press, 19 | 03 | 2019 - Opinión (Michael Doherty, CEO of the Woodbrook Group)
A world health index has declared Spain to be the fittest nation on the planet. Last year the University of Washington’s Health Metrics Institute ranked the country second in its healthy nations league. Now another major rating agency, the Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, has gone one better and placed it top of its rankings. ... The index gives Spain the highest life expectancy at birth among European Union nations... Its big plus appears to be its diet. ... The lesson is: eat and drink like a Spaniard, just don’t smoke like one. Unfortunately, many Britons seem to do it the other way round... Bloomberg praises Spain’s public health system but ... Brexit may curtail that ... although it seems likely that their rights will be preserved. ... Most Spanish pensioners are looked after by their own families. Unless you are fortunate enough to have family members close by, you may need to pay for care.

"Brexit healthcare worries for Brits in Spain", Wilcox Guardian, 19 | 03 | 2019 - Reportaje (Jen Stanley)
...in ... pursuit of the Spanish retirement dream. There are about 70,000 British pensioners in Spain... uncertainty over what Brexit will mean for them now threatens their way of life and many are concerned they might have to return to cold, damp Britain. Their main worry is healthcare payments. ... The UK government is currently advising expat Brits in the EU to register for access to healthcare in the EU/EEA country they live in, as some residents may need to be a long-term resident or to pay social security contributions to access free or discounted healthcare. ... Malcolm Buckley, originally from ... Yorkshire, worries... “I wasn‘t even allowed to vote in the referendum. If we don‘t get that healthcare payment lots of us will have to go home.” Another blow to the British in Spain has been the falling value of the pound. ... There are some fears about pension payments as well.
