British MPs have backed a Parliamentary bid which will force PM Theresa May to negotiate to guarantee expats’ rights if the UK leaves the European Union without a deal. On Wednesday evening the House of Commons passed an amendment tabled by Conservative MP Alberto Costa which requires Mrs May ‘to seek at the earliest opportunity a joint UK-EU commitment to adopt part two of the Withdrawal Agreement on Citizens’ Rights and ensure its implementation prior to the UK’s exiting the European Union, whatever the outcome of negotiations on other aspects of the Withdrawal Agreement’.

The number of Britons retiring abroad increased 26 per cent over the past decade. In order to save the Treasury an estimated £3bn over five years, expatriates in countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa will miss out on as much as £50,000 over the course of their retirement because they are exempt from “triple lock” state pension protection. (...) The government has confirmed that British retirees living in EU countries will continue to receive a triple-lock state pension, which is good news for the 469,000 people currently living in EU member states. Research from investment platform easyMoney suggests the numbers are up from around 371,000 in 2008. (...) But with a no-deal Brexit still looming, Britons living in these countries could quickly find themselves facing the same huge financial hole as those living further afield. (...) ...UK nationals who rely on their EHIC card if they fall ill will NOT be covered in case of a no-deal Brexit. While that isn’t a worry for those who live in Spain and have a Spanish health card, it is something to warn visitors and relatives who might be coming to stay for any period of time. ... Those who are living in Spain and are entitled to one can apply for a Spanish EHIC card that will mean they can access necessary healthcare in other EU countries... In the event of a No-Deal Brexit then theoretically the S1 arrangement would automatically cease to apply but in Spain’s new Brexit contingency plan law – which is due to be signed on Friday March 1st – the Spanish government guarantees that the same conditions will be applied until December 2020. Basically, if you were entitled to access Spanish healthcare based on an S1 certificate before March 29th 2019, then you can legitimately continue for another 21 months. However, this has to be reciprocated by the British authorities towards Spanish citizens in UK or the measure will be suspended within two months.
