New flexible retirement rules will give some Spanish pensioners more freedom to return to work while continuing to receive part of their pension. ... For foreign residents who have spent years working and paying into Spain’s Social Security system, that could mean working part time or, in certain circumstances, becoming self employed without completely giving up their Spanish pension. ... But not everyone will qualify, and how much of your pension you can keep depends on how you return to work.

"Reform UK plan £500m rescue fund for British expats forced back to UK by possible benefits loss", Majorca Daily Bulletin, 22 | 08 | 2026 - Noticia
...Reform UK ... unveiled a proposal aimed to restrict almost all welfare benefits exclusively to British citizens ... this could hit expats in Spain and across the European Union. ... Because this violates the Brexit withdrawal agreement, it would require intense renegotiations with Brussels. ... EU countries would likely respond by applying the same restrictions. This means British expats living in European countries ... could be stripped of their rights to host-country social benefits, housing subsidies, and healthcare assistance. For British expats currently living abroad who claim UK disability benefits, Reform UK suggests they would face two choices: return to the UK to continue receiving support, or rely on a negotiated framework where the UK might directly export those benefits under a strict new qualification scheme.

"Older Britons in Spain face a painful choice as the retirement dream becomes harder to live", Euro Weekly News, 04 | 08 | 2026 - Reportaje (Harry Dennis)
Retiring beneath the Spanish sun is easy to picture at 65. The harder question is whether the same home, climate and distance from family will still feel manageable at 80, and official figures show that the balance among older Britons has already shifted towards departures. ... Temperature is only part of the equation. A home reached mainly by car, steep stairs or a quiet out-of-season neighbourhood may feel very different after illness, bereavement or reduced mobility. The UK government’s later-life guidance for British residents says families are generally expected to provide social care in Spain. Support commonly associated with UK local authorities may not always be available, even where a resident has access to Spanish state healthcare. And for British families, post-Brexit travel and residency rules can also complicate extended stays by relatives when daily care becomes necessary. Yet this is not a wholesale rejection of Spain. British buyers remained the largest foreign group in Spain’s housing market during the first half of 2025, completing 5,731 purchases, according to the General Council of Notaries.

But a major change coming into force in April 2027 could alter what happens to those savings after they die. A pension that many expats believed would pass to loved ones outside inheritance tax rules could soon be treated differently by the UK tax authorities. The change will apply to deaths on or after April 6 2027 and will bring certain UK-held pensions into the inheritance tax system. The pension itself will not lose value, but the way it is viewed for inheritance tax purposes will change.
