ERA - Upcoming Conferences

ACADÉMIE DE DROIT EUROPÉEN - ACADEMY OF EUROPEAN LAW - EUROPÄISCHE RECHTSAKADEMIE - ACCADEMIA DI DIRITTO EUROPEO (ERA):

-Conference 'Recent developments in EC consumer law' (Trier, 9-10 Oct 2008). The purpose of this annual conference is to analyse the current state of EU consumer protection law as well as the most important recent EU initiatives in this field, meeting the requirements of lawyers involved in consumer protection to keep themselves informed about the latest developments.
This year’s event will pay special detailed attention to consumer credit. After years of negotiation, a new consumer credit directive will be adopted. It aims at making it easier for consumers to choose credit from any EU Member State whilst ensuring a high level of consumer protection. Rules about advertising, pre-contractual and contractual information, such as information on the total cost of the credit (APRC - Annual Percentage Rate of Charge), as well as early repayment terms, will be harmonised.
An update on other ongoing initiatives and developments will also be provided, such as the proposal for a new timeshare directive, a possible revision of the doorstep selling directive, the review of the consumer acquis, the single market review, as well as the new “Rome I” regulation setting out the applicable law to consumer contracts.
This list of topics, which is not exhaustive, may be subject to modifications and additions in the final programme to reflect the latest developments.

-Conference 'Litigating European Community Law' (Luxembourg & Trier, 15-17 Oct 2008).
The purpose of this seminar, which is aimed primarily at national legal practitioners, is to provide the participants with the fundamentals on the Union’s judicial system, judicial remedies and the interaction between European and national jurisdictions. The seminar will, on the one hand, highlight the relevance of Community law in litigation before national courts and hence for the daily work of the national lawyer. It will examine Community law’s effect in the national legal systems (such as direct effect and indirect effect) and it will analyse Community law’s requirements on national remedies and procedures.
On the other hand, the seminar will describe the various proceedings before the Community Courts (the European Court of Justice, the Court of First Instance and the Civil Service Tribunal) in which a national practitioner is likely to become involved (actions of annulment, infringement proceedings and actions for non-contractual liability). The course will also address the Lisbon Treaty’s impact on the judicial system of the Union, especially on the enlarging jurisdiction of the Court. The seminar will feature classic lectures and an interactive workshop session.
The course includes a visit to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. Participants will have the opportunity to take a preparatory online e-learning module.
