A new register to identify foreign owners of UK property will come into effect in 2021 and will expose thousands of overseas investors and homeowners to the UK’s inheritance tax laws, according to London-based life insurance specialist adviser John Lamb Hill Oldridge (JLHO). The UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy register is designed to ensure that details of buyers, be they British expatriates or overseas nationals, are captured in order to mitigate potential money laundering and tax avoidance activities.

UK nationals looking to visit Spain for short or long stays after Brexit have to factor in the visas they may require now that they are non-EU citizens. ... For those living in Spain before December 31 2020, applying for the TIE residency card is their only option if they wish to stay past 90 days and they haven’t registered before. ... Although tax residence follows where an expat lives – except in the case of Americans – domicile comes with a different set of rules that can mean even if a British expat lives in another country for decades, their estate will still pay inheritance tax in the UK when they die.
